One Year Later- Overcoming Challenges

Yesterday, Friday April 2nd was a BIG day, more like a sense of accomplishment. It has been just over a year, since my mom was able to get into the shower with two people assisting her. You may be thinking to yourself- Big Deal. But it is a big deal for me. First, let me clarify I do bathe my mom everyday, but give her sponge baths. I had to learn how to do that method of bathing for my mom last year because her mobility was limited as well as her cognitive state of mind. With time, I have noticed a “drive” in my mom where she is motivated to take on small challenges. With that positive mindset, I decided to challenge not only her but myself as well. It is a bit nerve wrecking because if she loses her balance she could fall. Fortunately, I had someone else helping me, so that gave me more confidence ensuring my mom had additional safety. I no longer feel comfortable taking on this endeavor on my own- she is a two person assist with this regard.

Once we successfully got her into the shower, and she sat on her seat, she was like a child. She was firmly grasping the shower head as she was drenched in hot water. Mom did not let go of the shower head until the hot water gradually turned cold. She was so happy and I felt like a proud parent. Little accomplishments such as these take time and baby steps, but once set into motion the million watt smile is priceless.
